“ It's never too late to lift weights: Older bodies can still build muscle….healthy people in their 60s, 70s and beyond can safely start lifting weights and rapidly build substantial muscle mass, strength and mobility ”
I take great motivation and inspiration from the people I train. Gaynor and Mike who are in their late 60´s and late 70´s who have been training with me for about 15 or so years attribute the fact they they are still waterskiing , mono skiing, playing golf regularly and being able to play with their grand children on a regular basis - down to the fact that they have maintained their training with me
Bob who is 83 and was suffering with various ailments which prevented him from playing golf - I managed to turn around and get him playing golf again .
Sandy in her 70´s is recovering from feet operations , has arthritis and was getting very frustrated, unable to walk very far and feeling very frustrated and down … I am working with her to turn her life around . After the first session she said she was already feeling so much better .
These are just a few examples of many older people I have helped to get back on their feet again . Quite literally.
It sounds silly but exercise really does turn your life around and it does not take much either to instantly change your mood and give you something to feel proud of .
The moment you stop moving - the body starts to break down . The longer you leave it the more you lose strength , muscle mass and cardiovascular fitness - however the good news is that regrades of where you start from and what age you are - you will always improve.
Arthritis is a cruel disease making movement very painful and pain brings you down , its a nagging affliction thats very tiring - when you start to move everything hurts but as you continue it brings relief and actually helps .
“ Older adults should be as physically active as their abilities and conditions allow. For substantial health benefits, older adults need to do aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and stretching exercises weekly, and balance activities as needed.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29129214/
What ever your ailment - depression or feeling down , bad back , herniated discs , high blood pressure, over weight , type II diabetes, metabolic disease , lacking purpose or drive .. exercise will be your remedy .
Exercise is the magic pill that you cannot buy over the counter - its not the quick fix drug although you will immediately feel better - it is the long term investment in your health . The more you put in the better you will feel and the better the long term results
If you have never exercised and you are over 60 then its never too late to start and feel better
If you are over 50 then its critical you start now to negate what will hit you in your 70´s and 80´s
And if you are 40 then this is the time to start - menopause is on its way and we need to go into this next phase with as much strength and conditioning as possible .
