Count the number of flies in the teeth.
I love being out on my bike . It ticks so many boxes: the fact that you can ride in a group and share fun conversation , that you can cover some serious area - so much so that it makes going for a hike seem disappointing …. How far did we walk today ? 10km is that all … and it took most of the day ?
You really get to see a place by bike , you notice things that you would never notice in a car - like how bloody steep the hill is for a start ! You then have all the satisfaction of knowing that you got from A to B using your own body power - it is incredibly satisfying.
Mastering the downhill descent on a bike means you and the bike work together - people who ride motor bikes are naturals on road bikes because they already know how to lean into the corners , they already have the balls to descend with considerable trust- a stiff cyclist is like an uptight skier- the two things do not bode well.
Again another satisfying element of road biking is the more you go out and the more experience you accumulate the better you become , the faster you are able to descend and the more confident you feel.
Please never tell cyclists it is a dangerous sport - we know this - but the pleasure of riding is either worth it or not.
Would I be a road biker if I lived in the UK ? Mmm I can’t say that riding in the rain excites me too much nor does donning waterproofs , battling the wind, the grit and the cars that try to run you off the road. I have cycled in Cornwall - where the hedges are so high you cannot see the road ahead, There is no where to pull in on narrow roads and the weather is very unpredictable.
Here I don’t go out if the weather even looks ominous.
We are totally spoilt here - its cyclist paradise much to the disapproval of most car drivers I know. Well we don’t all take up the road, we don’t all ride egotistically through junctions and red lights.. all I would say to pedestrians using a crossing is - it is much easier for you to wait a minute than for us to stop and unclip.
With regard to cycling its a social form of exercise, its therapy, many problems are solved during cycling - in fact sometimes I need to stop and write ideas down before I forget them. It brings people closer together - tis a great way to get to know more people or meet more people and hopefully one day I will be able to afford mini cycle breaks all around Europe because as I mentioned - for me- it is the best way to travel.

The absolute cycling speed record is held by American Denise Mueller-Korenek, who reached 296 km/h in 2018 on Bonneville Salt Lake. This performance was achieved under very special conditions, with a specially designed bike and while sheltered behind a vehicle. On the road, speeds are naturally more modest but still spectacular.
In the sprints of the Tour de France, riders can reach peak speeds of 70-75 km/h on the flat, particularly during mass finishes. Sprinters such as Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel have regularly exceeded these speeds in their greatest successes. In time trials, champions can maintain averages in excess of 50 km/h over significant distances. The track hour record, set by Victor Campenaerts in 2019, stands at 55.089 kilometers. https://www.lokki.rent/en/media/vitesse-max-velo
